Golf Pro Joel Dahmen’s Costly Mistake
In a stunning turn of events, professional golfer Joel Dahmen withdrew from the Shriners Children’s Open on Friday, just one day after incurring a devastating four-stroke penalty for carrying an extra club in his bag.
A Penalty that Packs a Punch
The 36-year-old golfer, currently ranked 124th in the FedEx Cup Fall standings, was already struggling in 131st place out of 132 players at 5-over-par entering the second round at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. This setback could have significant implications for his playing status in 2025, as only the top 125 players will retain full status on tour.
An Honest Mistake
Dahmen, who has been open about his journey as a professional golfer on the Netflix documentary series “Full Swing,” took full responsibility for the error, admitting that he had mistakenly packed 15 clubs in his bag instead of the allowed 14. “I’d like to blame my caddie, Geno, but it’s not his fault,” Dahmen said. “I played Tuesday and Wednesday, and we didn’t notice the extra club until I reached for a water on the 4th tee.”
A Simple Oversight with Big Consequences
The extra club, a 4-iron, was discovered in the wrong spot in his bag, throwing Dahmen’s entire game off kilter. “It sucks, especially considering where I am in the standings,” he lamented. With only one career PGA Tour win under his belt, at the 2021 Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship, Dahmen is now fighting to maintain his position in the world rankings, where he currently sits at 229th.
A Lesson Learned
This costly mistake serves as a harsh reminder to all professional golfers of the importance of attention to detail, even in the smallest aspects of the game. As Dahmen moves forward, he’ll need to regroup and refocus to ensure that this error doesn’t define his season.
