Rookie Defensive End Laiatu Latu: A Force to be Reckoned With
In the aftermath of the Indianapolis Colts’ Week 5 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, defensive end Laiatu Latu sat at his locker, his head buried in his hands, frustration and anger simmering. Despite a solid performance, including six tackles and a forced fumble, the Colts’ wretched defensive display weighed heavily on his mind.
High Standards, Higher Expectations
Latu, the Colts’ top draft pick and first defensive player chosen in the spring’s draft, has lofty standards for himself and his team. His dissatisfaction with falling short of that high bar is palpable. “We’ve gotta clean up our tackling,” he insisted. “It’s frustrating.” This rookie is emotionally invested, and his coaches appreciate that.
Making an Impact
While Latu has only one sack through six games, he leads all Colts defenders with nine pressures, according to ESPN’s tracking. His 15.9% pass-rush win rate is respectable, outpacing notable pass rushers like Montez Sweat and Travon Walker. Teammates are taking notice of his efforts, urging him to keep applying pressure.
Perfection Eludes, but Progress is Made
Initially intended to be a rotational player, Latu’s role has expanded due to the Colts’ defensive line injuries. He’s averaged 41 snaps in the past three games, up from 30 in the first three. While his production might not be as high as expected, he’s making an impact in run defense and pass rush.
Growth Opportunities Abound
The Colts’ defensive struggles have provided an opportunity for Latu’s growth. He’s focused on his run defense, and it’s paying off. Against Jacksonville, he was an active run defender, helping limit the Jaguars to 126 rushing yards. His pass rush is also coming along, with multiple quarterback hits in Week 6.
The Sacks Will Come
Latu’s coaches believe his sacks will come soon. “It might not show up in sack totals,” defensive coordinator Gus Bradley said. “We’re seeing him get there. Just like we tell them with takeaways, just keep going. They’ll come in bunches.” Latu’s hard work and dedication will eventually pay off.
Winning is the Ultimate Goal
As Latu composed himself in the locker room, his focus remained on one thing: winning. “I love this team, man,” he said. “I just want to win.” The Colts believe he’s on his way to helping them achieve just that.
