Sizzling Start in Andalucia Masters
French golfer Julien Guerrier sent shockwaves through the golfing world on Thursday, carding an incredible 10-under 62 in the opening round of the Andalucia Masters in San Roque, Spain.
Birdie Bonanza
Guerrier’s blistering start saw him sink nine birdies on his first 11 holes, leaving the competition in awe. He continued his impressive form with a birdie on the 15th hole, securing a one-shot lead over Englishman Dan Brown, who had a remarkable round of his own with two eagles and five birdies.
Guerrier’s Golden Round
“I felt like I was playing a video game on the front nine – it was that good!” Guerrier exclaimed. “Of course, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement, but I knew I had to stay focused for all 18 holes. With this wind, anything can happen.”
Bogey-Free Brilliance
Guerrier’s remarkable round was made all the more impressive by his ability to avoid bogeys altogether at the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande in southern Spain. “When everything clicks like that, it’s an incredible feeling,” he said. “It looks easy from the outside, but it’s tough to stay present and not get too emotional. You have to find a balance between enjoying the ride and staying calm.”
Rahm Struggles to Find Rhythm
Meanwhile, world No. 14 Jon Rahm struggled to find his groove, shooting a 2-under par round that included five birdies and three bogeys. He finds himself tied for 38th place, a far cry from his usual dominant form.
Star-Studded Field
Rahm is the top-ranked player in the field this week, which marks the final tournament of the year on European soil for the European tour. The only other top 50 player in the world ranking, Thriston Lawrence, carded a disappointing 69. Home favorite Jorge Campillo of Spain fared better, shooting a bogey-free 64 to sit two shots off the lead.
The Road Ahead
With the Andalucia Masters reaching its climax, all eyes will be on Guerrier to see if he can maintain his scintillating form. The European tour now heads to South Korea, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai for its final tournaments of the year.
