F1 Ditches Fastest Lap Bonus Point in 2025 Shake-Up

Formula One Shakes Up Scoring System

Get ready for a thrilling change in the world of Formula One! As of next season, the bonus point awarded to the driver who sets the fastest lap in a grand prix will be scrapped. This move, announced by the governing FIA, marks a significant shift in the sport’s scoring system.

Fastest Lap Point: A Strategic Play?

Since 2019, drivers have been awarded an extra point for setting the fastest lap, provided they finish in the top 10. While this point can be crucial in a tight championship race, it has also become a strategic tool for teams. In some cases, teams have used it to gain an advantage over their rivals, sparking controversy.

A Recent Example

At the Singapore Grand Prix last month, Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo pitted at the end for fresh tires to set the fastest lap. Although he didn’t earn a point himself, his move benefited teammate Max Verstappen by taking the point away from McLaren’s Lando Norris. This highlights how the fastest lap point can be exploited for strategic gain.

Drivers Weigh In

Sauber driver Valtteri Bottas believes the change is long overdue. “It’s not really relative to the speed… it’s always depending on strategy,” he said at the Circuit of the Americas. “I think even with our car, we could sometimes maybe get it if we stop before the last lap and go all out.”

Other Regulation Changes

In addition to scrapping the fastest lap point, the FIA has also approved changes to the 2024 and 2025 sporting and technical regulations. One notable change is the requirement for teams to field a young driver during free practice, which will increase from once per car per season to twice per car per season.

A New Era for Formula One

With these changes, Formula One is poised to enter a new era of competition. By eliminating the fastest lap point, the sport aims to refocus on pure speed and driving skill. Will this shake-up lead to more exciting races and a more level playing field? Only time will tell.
