Scoring Snafu Rocks NBL
In a stunning admission, the National Basketball League (NBL) has owned up to a scoring error that could have dramatically altered the outcome of a recent match. The mistake, which occurred during the Perth Wildcats’ 90-87 win over the Cairns Taipans on October 10, has left fans and officials alike reeling.
A Narrow Escape
Fortunately for the league, a last-ditch three-point attempt by Cairns import Rob Edwards bounced off the rim, sparing officials a potentially embarrassing scenario. Had the shot gone in, the game would have headed into overtime, giving Cairns a chance to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
The Error Explained
According to the NBL, the mistake occurred due to a flaw in the scoring process, which went undetected until after the final whistle. “There was an error in the process and handling of the scores which wasn’t detected until after the game,” the league explained in a statement.
Rules Are Rules
Under FIBA regulations, scoring errors cannot be corrected once the game clock expires. As a result, the original score of 90-87 will stand, despite the NBL’s acknowledgment of the mistake.
Taking Responsibility
NBL boss of basketball operations Vince Crivelli has taken full responsibility for the error, vowing to educate personnel on correct protocols to prevent such mistakes in the future. “We own, accept, and take full responsibility for the error made,” Crivelli said. “We take the matter extremely seriously.”
Moving Forward
The Perth Wildcats will look to put the controversy behind them as they travel to face the New Zealand Breakers on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Cairns Taipans will host Illawarra, seeking to bounce back from their narrow defeat. Despite the scoring snafu, the NBL season is shaping up to be an exciting one, with plenty of drama still to come.
