A New Chapter Unfolds for Lonzo Ball
After a grueling two-year hiatus, Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball is finally ready to step back onto the court, and he’s beaming with joy. As he prepares to face the Minnesota Timberwolves in Wednesday’s preseason game, Ball acknowledges that his journey back to the NBA has been far from easy.
A Body Transformed
“It’s not the same body I started off with,” Ball admits, reflecting on the toll his injuries have taken. Despite undergoing three arthroscopic procedures on his left knee, including a rare double cartilage transplant in March 2023, Ball remains determined to prove himself as a productive and effective player.
The Road to Recovery
Ball’s recovery process has been nothing short of remarkable. With a laugh, he describes it as “long. Really long.” Yet, he’s quick to add that it’s gone faster than he anticipated. After being told he’d need 18 more months of recovery following his third surgery, Ball is relieved to have put those challenging times behind him.
A Season of Redemption
In his first season with the Bulls in 2021-22, Ball averaged 13.0 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.1 assists on 42% shooting in 35 games. Now, as he approaches his 27th birthday, Ball is eager to redeem himself on the court. Throughout his recovery, he’s drawn strength from his own self-belief, seeking opinions from multiple knee specialists until he found a path to recovery.
A Careful Balance
As Ball returns to the court, he’ll be restricted to no more than 16 minutes in Wednesday’s game. He’s aware that managing his workload and playing time will be crucial this season. “We have a good handle right now, but I think it’s going to change throughout the year,” Ball notes. “Every day is going to be a different challenge we just have to overcome.”
The Next Chapter Begins
With a newfound appreciation for the game, Ball is ready to take on the challenges that lie ahead. As he steps back onto the court, he’s poised to prove that he still has what it takes to be a dominant force in the NBA. The wait is finally over, and Lonzo Ball is ready to write the next chapter of his remarkable journey.
