Davante Adams Set to Debut for New York Jets on Sunday Night
The wait is almost over for New York Jets fans, as star wide receiver Davante Adams is expected to make his debut on Sunday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Adams, who was acquired from the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday, will be reunited with his former quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and interim coach Jeff Ulbrich is confident that he’ll be ready to go.
A Familiar System
Ulbrich believes that Adams’ familiarity with the Jets’ offense, which is similar to the system he played in for years, will make it easier for him to get up to speed quickly. “Fortunately, there’s a lot of familiarity with the offense,” Ulbrich said. “It’s been a system he’s been a part of for years, so I don’t foresee it being a huge obstacle getting him going and involved.”
A Healthy Adams
Adams has been sidelined for the past three games with a hamstring injury, but he’s now feeling great and ready to roll. During a surprise appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday, Adams expressed his excitement to play on Sunday. “I’m feeling great, man,” he said.
Reuniting with Rodgers
The reunion of Adams and Rodgers is highly anticipated, as they formed one of the greatest quarterback-wide receiver combinations in recent NFL history. During their eight seasons together in Green Bay, Adams caught 615 passes from Rodgers for 7,517 yards and 68 touchdowns. Ulbrich praised the unique connection between the two, saying, “Their connection and their chemistry between the two of those guys is just so unique. They spent so much time together for one, but for two, they’re both high football IQ guys that really can take their connection to another space.”
A Humble Superstar
Ulbrich was impressed by Adams’ humility and love for football after meeting him on Tuesday. “I’ve never met him prior to him coming in yesterday and what an amazing human being,” he said. “You never know what a superstar is going to be like — sometimes a little weird sometimes and not at all. Just the humility I felt on him, the great teammate I felt on the love for football. I’m so excited to add this guy to our, not just to the field as a player but to the locker room from a culture standpoint.”
A Crowded Wide Receivers Group
Adams joins a talented group of wide receivers, including Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard, Mike Williams, Xavier Gipson, Irvin Charles, and rookie Malachi Corley. While there may be questions about how playcaller Todd Downing will find roles for everyone, Ulbrich sees it as a positive challenge. “It’s a really cool problem to have,” he said. “It’s going to give us an opportunity to have more flexibility where we move these guys around.”
Injury Update
Rodgers sat out Wednesday’s walk-through to rest his banged-up left ankle, but Ulbrich expects him to practice on Thursday and be fine to play on Sunday. Cornerbacks D.J. Reed (groin) and Michael Carter II (back) may miss the game due to injuries.
