Star Power in Peril: Paul George Sidelined with Knee Injury
Philadelphia 76ers fans held their collective breath on Monday night as star forward Paul George suffered a hyperextended left knee in the second quarter of their preseason win against the Atlanta Hawks. The injury forced George to exit the game, and he didn’t return. Coach Nick Nurse expressed optimism about George’s prognosis, saying, “Hopefully it’ll be OK, so he’s back with us right away.”
A Familiar Sight: George’s Injury History
This isn’t the first time George has dealt with injuries. In his final year with the Los Angeles Clippers, he played a career-high 74 games, but prior to that, he hadn’t played more than 56 games in each of his previous four seasons. The 76ers were already planning to take a cautious approach with George’s health this season, with president of basketball operations Daryl Morey revealing that both George and Joel Embiid will “probably not play many back-to-backs, if any.”
Embiid’s Preseason Status
Speaking of Embiid, the star center has already been ruled out for the rest of the preseason as he continues to ramp up his conditioning and activity levels. Embiid suffered a left knee injury last season that limited him to 39 games. With the regular-season opener against the Milwaukee Bucks on October 23 fast approaching, the 76ers are taking no chances with their star players’ health.
A Season of Caution
As the 76ers prepare for the new season, it’s clear that they’re prioritizing the long-term health of their star players. With George and Embiid both nursing injuries, the team will need to rely on their supporting cast to step up and fill the void. One thing is certain – the 76ers will be taking a cautious approach to ensure their stars are ready to shine when it matters most.
