A Rocky Start, But Hope Remains for the Buffalo Sabres
The Buffalo Sabres’ 2024-25 season got off to a dismal start, with two consecutive losses in the NHL’s Global Series showcase in Prague. The team’s struggles continued back home, with another loss to the Los Angeles Kings. But amidst the turmoil, there are signs of life, and reason to believe that this season might not be a lost cause just yet.
Learning from Early Mistakes
Forward Alex Tuch acknowledges that the team’s early struggles were a valuable learning experience. “We learned what not to do,” he said. “It was a big learning experience. It’s something where you just have to realize that in this league, it’s tough. No matter what’s going on, who you’re playing, when you’re playing them, where you are in the world, you have to show up, and if you don’t, it’s not going to go your way.”
A Glimmer of Hope
The Sabres’ first win of the season, a 5-2 victory over the reigning Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers, was a much-needed shot in the arm. It was a cohesive effort, with key contributions from Jordan Greenway, Tage Thompson, and Tuch. While it’s easy to dismiss the win as a fluke, given the Panthers’ missing players and backup goaltender, it’s a start.
Fixing the Power Play
One area of concern for the Sabres is their struggling power play, which has yet to score in 14 attempts. Coach Lindy Ruff has been working to remedy the problem, tweaking the team’s looks and yelling over botched attempts. Analyst Martin Biron agrees that zone entries have been a major issue, but notes that the team has made progress in recent games.
Top Players Need to Step Up
The Sabres need more from their top players, including Jack Quinn, who has yet to find his footing this season. Quinn acknowledges that he hasn’t had a good start to the year, but is determined to establish himself as a force on the ice. Biron believes that Quinn, along with Thompson, Peterka, and Cozens, needs to pull his weight if the Sabres are going to turn their season around.
Goaltending: A Bright Spot
One area where the Sabres have excelled is in goaltending, with Devon Levi and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen forming a solid tandem. Biron notes that goaltending is the least of the team’s worries, and that if both goalies stay healthy, they’ll give the Sabres a fighting chance every night.
The Road Ahead
The Sabres face a tough road trip ahead, but they can’t afford to focus on past mistakes. As they begin their journey, it’s about redemption, momentum, and proving that one bad week is no reason to stop believing. With 78 games left to play, there’s still time for the Sabres to turn their season around and make a push for the playoffs.
