Phillies Secure Manager Rob Thomson for 2026 Season
The Philadelphia Phillies have locked in manager Rob Thomson for another year, signing him to a one-year contract extension through the 2026 season. This move comes on the heels of Thomson leading the team to three consecutive playoff appearances, including a World Series appearance in 2022 and a National League Championship Series appearance in 2023.
A Winning Formula
Thomson’s impressive.575 winning percentage is the highest in franchise history, making him the obvious choice to continue at the helm. When asked about the extension, Thomson expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Year by year is good with me… This is the only place I want to be. This will be my last stop.”
Coaching Staff Remains Intact
Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski announced that the entire coaching staff, including polarizing hitting coach Kevin Long, will return next season. Thomson praised the staff, saying, “Many managers will say it, but I truly believe we have the best coaching staff in baseball.”
Building on Success
Coming off a 95-67 season, Dombrowski expressed his satisfaction with the team’s direction under Thomson’s leadership. “I think we have a good coaching staff, primarily… They do a very efficient job. They did lead us to 95 wins.” The Phillies’ roster, featuring stars like Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, and Zack Wheeler, will largely remain intact, with some intriguing decisions to be made regarding players like Alec Bohm and Bryson Stott.
Room for Improvement
While Dombrowski believes the team has the potential to win a World Championship, he acknowledges the need for adjustments. “I think it’s a good roster… However, you’re also open-minded to making adjustments. I think that’s a necessity.” With a $249 million payroll, the Phillies will need to make strategic moves to stay competitive.
Stability at the Top
Dombrowski emphasized the importance of avoiding a lame-duck manager situation, stating, “He’s done a good job for us, been a very successful manager… We’ve been a very good club under his guidance.” Thomson’s extension ensures stability in the manager’s spot, allowing the team to focus on building towards a championship.
