Utah Hockey Club Suffers Major Blow as Sean Durzi Goes Down
The Utah Hockey Club has been dealt a significant setback with the news that defenseman Sean Durzi will be out indefinitely due to an upper-body injury. General Manager Bill Armstrong confirmed the devastating news on Tuesday, just a day after Durzi was hit by New Jersey Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler during Monday’s 3-0 loss.
A Devastating Hit
The incident occurred when Durzi was carrying the puck during the Devils’ home victory, leaving him sidelined for the foreseeable future. Armstrong painted a bleak picture of Durzi’s prospects, stating, “It doesn’t look like he’s going to be back anytime soon.”
A Key Player Lost
Durzi, who turns 26 on Monday, has been an integral part of the Utah Hockey Club’s lineup, notching two assists in four games this season. His absence will be deeply felt, particularly given his involvement in the team’s first fight of the season against the Chicago Blackhawks on October 8.
Finding a Replacement
Armstrong acknowledged the challenge of replacing Durzi, saying, “You’re never going to replace him, but we’re going to have someone go in there and try and basically patch up the best way we can.” This may involve calling up a player from within the organization or relying on veterans like Robert Bortuzzo to fill the gap.
A Promising Career Put on Hold
Durzi’s injury is a setback for a player who has shown immense promise in his young career. Selected by Toronto in the second round of the 2018 NHL draft, he has racked up 21 goals, 87 assists, and 175 penalty minutes in 216 games for the Los Angeles Kings, Coyotes, and Utah Hockey Club. Last season, he achieved career highs with 32 assists and 41 points in 76 games for Arizona, earning him a four-year, $24 million contract extension through the 2027-28 season.
