USC Linebacker Eric Gentry Takes a Step Back for His Health
In a move that showcases his commitment to prioritizing his well-being, USC linebacker Eric Gentry has announced that he will be redshirting the remainder of the 2024 season. The decision comes after a series of concussions in a short period of time, which has taken a toll on his health.
A Difficult but Necessary Choice
Gentry took to social media to share his thoughts, saying, “This decision has not been easy… But after thoughtful consideration and discussions with my family and the coaching staff, I know it’s the right choice for my well-being and long-term health.” He was quick to dispel any rumors, stating that his decision had nothing to do with playing time or name, image, and likeness opportunities.
A Key Player Sidelined
Gentry’s impact on USC’s defense under first-year coordinator D’Anton Lynn cannot be overstated. Through four games, he led the Trojans in tackles (22), tackles for loss (6.5), and sacks (2), with one forced fumble to his credit. His absence will undoubtedly be felt, especially after missing the past two games against Minnesota and Penn State due to previously undisclosed injuries.
New NCAA Rules Provide a Silver Lining
Thanks to the new NCAA rules, Gentry will still be eligible to return in 2025 as a fifth-year senior, having seen action in up to four games this season. This provides a glimmer of hope for the Trojans, who will welcome back a seasoned player next year.
Another Blow to the Defensive Line
In a separate development, Trojans coach Lincoln Riley announced that defensive end Anthony Lucas will miss the rest of the season due to a “lower extremity” injury. Lucas underwent a procedure on Tuesday morning and had been struggling with the injury, limping off the field against Minnesota two weeks ago.
Filling the Void
Lucas’ absence will be deeply felt, particularly given his promising start to the season, with 16 tackles to his name. The defensive line depth, already thin, will now rely on freshman defensive end Kameryn Fountain, a four-star recruit, to help fill the void.
