Detroit Lions Lock in Star Running Back with Lucrative Extension
The Detroit Lions have secured a key piece of their offense, signing running back David Montgomery to a two-year, $18.25 million extension that will keep him with the team through the 2027 season.
A Big Payday for Montgomery
The deal includes $10.5 million in new guaranteed money, making Montgomery the seventh-highest-paid running back in the NFL based on new money per year ($9.125M). The Lions announced the extension on Saturday night but did not disclose the terms of the deal.
A Dominant Duo in the Backfield
Montgomery, 27, has been a crucial part of the Lions’ offense this season, rushing for 271 yards and four touchdowns on a team-high 63 carries. He forms a potent one-two punch with second-year back Jahmyr Gibbs, who has 285 rushing yards on 54 attempts and three TDs. Gibbs recently declared that he and Montgomery are the NFL’s best RB duo, citing their versatility and production.
A History of Success
Since joining the Lions in 2023, Montgomery has started all 18 games he has appeared in and has scored a rushing touchdown in seven straight games, tying a franchise record. He has also racked up 17 rushing TDs, tied for the fourth most in the league over that span.
A Shrewd Move by the Lions
By locking in Montgomery early, the Lions have ensured stability in their backfield and have given themselves a strong foundation for future success. With Montgomery and Gibbs leading the way, the Lions are well-positioned to make a deep run in the playoffs.
