Christen Press Makes Triumphant Return to NWSL with Dramatic Goal
After a 28-month hiatus, Christen Press is back and better than ever. The two-time Women’s World Cup winner scored her first NWSL goal since her return from a debilitating ACL injury that required four surgeries.
A Long Road to Recovery
Press’s journey to recovery was nothing short of arduous. She injured her right knee in June 2022 and underwent a lengthy rehabilitation process. Despite the setbacks, Press remained determined to return to the field and do what she loves most – score goals.
A Moment of Pure Elation
That moment finally arrived on Saturday when Press drilled a left-footed shot past North Carolina goalkeeper Casey Murphy in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time. The goal gave Angel City a 1-0 lead and sent the crowd into raptures.
“It felt like an out-of-body experience,” Press said after the match. “I couldn’t even tell you how the goal went. It’s so funny these things that you want to do so badly.”
A Bittersweet Result
However, the celebration was short-lived as the Courage equalized moments later through Olivia Wingate’s sharp strike. The match ended 1-1, leaving Angel City with a mixed sense of emotions.
A Glimpse into the Future
Despite the result, Press’s goal marked a significant milestone in her career. As she looks to the future, she’s excited to see what’s in store for her. “I hope it is a quintessential Christen Press goal, and I will be really proud,” she said.
With this performance, Press has shown that she’s still got it, even at 35 years old and after four ACL surgeries. The stage is set for a thrilling comeback story, and fans can’t wait to see what’s next for this talented athlete.
