Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Backs Head Coach Mike McCarthy Amid Disappointing Season
The Dallas Cowboys are reeling from their worst home loss since Jerry Jones took over as owner and general manager. A 47-9 thrashing at the hands of the Detroit Lions has left the team searching for answers. Despite the dismal performance, Jones is standing by his head coach, Mike McCarthy.
Jones dismissed speculation about a potential coaching change, saying, “I haven’t even considered that. I’m not considering that. Just so you’re clear, I’m not considering that.” When reminded of his previous in-season coaching change in 2010, Jones became defensive, stating, “That would be a hypothetical. Do you think I’m an idiot? Do you? OK. Well, I’m not going to hypothetical with you about would I consider a coaching change in light of the timing we’re sitting here with. I’m not. At all.”
McCarthy’s Future in Question
McCarthy is in the final year of his contract, and the team’s lack of playoff success has put his future in doubt. Despite posting three straight 12-5 finishes, the Cowboys have failed to advance beyond the divisional round of the playoffs under his leadership.
The team’s 3-3 record has them trailing the Washington Commanders in the NFC East. The Cowboys have lost their first three home games for the first time since 2010 and have been outscored by 66 points in those games.
Players Take Responsibility
Quarterback Dak Prescott acknowledged the team’s struggles, saying, “We’re disappointed that we’re 3-3. The three-loss side of it, I don’t necessarily totally blame on McCarthy. The players will tell you they had something to do with it, too.”
Tight end Jake Ferguson echoed Prescott’s sentiments, stating, “We got a bye week ahead of us, kind of time to reset, refocus and come out there two weeks from now and respond.”
Prescott Expresses Support for McCarthy
Prescott expressed his confidence in McCarthy, saying, “I’ll go to war for that guy, with that guy every single day. And I’m not the only one in that locker room. I feel like everybody feels that.”
As the Cowboys head into their bye week, they will have to regroup and refocus before facing the San Francisco 49ers on October 27. With their season hanging in the balance, Jones and the team will be looking for a strong response to their recent struggles.
