England Rugby Coaching Lineup Confirmed for Autumn Internationals
A new era is unfolding in English rugby as the national team confirms its coaching lineup for the upcoming autumn internationals. Richard Wigglesworth, a former England scrum-half, has been promoted to senior assistant coach, joining forces with head coach Steve Borthwick to drive the team’s success.
Changes in the Backroom Team
The summer Tests against Japan and New Zealand saw significant upheaval in the backroom team, with Aled Walters, head of strength and conditioning, and coach Felix Jones handing in their resignations. Walters has joined Ireland, while Jones is working his 12-month notice period remotely in an analysis role.
New Appointments
To fill the gaps, Joe El-Abd has been brought in as defence coach, undertaking his England duties while seeing out the rest of the season as director of rugby at Oyonnax. Tom Harrison and Andrew Strawbridge remain in their roles, providing continuity and stability to the coaching group.
Wigglesworth’s Key Role
As senior assistant coach, Wigglesworth will work closely with Borthwick on developing England’s game plan, attacking strategy, and supporting him on day-to-day leadership and managing the coaching group. “Richard’s deep knowledge of the game and his excellent tactical understanding means he has become a key figure in our coaching team,” Borthwick said.
A Shared Vision
Wigglesworth shares Borthwick’s emotional commitment to English rugby and is eager to help the team reach new heights. “Coaching is my passion, and I’m eager to do whatever I can to help this talented group of players win games of rugby, consistently,” he said. With a shared vision and a collaborative coaching environment, the stage is set for an exciting autumn series.
The Road Ahead
As the team prepares for four Tests in November, the coaching lineup is primed to drive success. With Wigglesworth’s expertise and Borthwick’s leadership, the team is poised to take on the challenges of the autumn internationals and beyond.
