Florida Quarterback Graham Mertz Out for the Season with Torn ACL

In a devastating blow to the Florida Gators, quarterback Graham Mertz will undergo surgery and miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee during Saturday’s overtime loss to Tennessee.

Mertz, a sixth-year senior, was injured in a non-contact play after throwing a 13-yard touchdown pass to Arlis Boardingham in the third quarter. As he backed up after making the throw, his leg landed awkwardly on the turf, causing the injury.

A Tough Break for Mertz

The injury marks a heartbreaking end to Mertz’s college career. Despite his tough luck, Mertz has been an integral part of the team, and his contributions will not be forgotten. “It’s only right that I say how much I appreciate what he’s brought to the team,” said coach Billy Napier.

Mertz has been plagued by injuries throughout his career. He fractured his collarbone in the next-to-last game of last season and sustained a concussion in the season-opening loss to Miami this year.

DJ Lagway Takes the Reins

With Mertz sidelined, true freshman DJ Lagway will take over as the full-time quarterback. Lagway has been rotating with Mertz for much of the season and started in Week 2, passing for 456 yards. He also threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Chimere Dike on third-and-19 in the final seconds to force overtime against Tennessee.

Lagway was ESPN’s top-rated quarterback nationally in the 2024 signing class and the No. 8 prospect overall. He will face a tough test as the Gators return home to face Kentucky on Saturday, followed by four straight games against teams ranked in the top 20 in the AP poll.

Mertz’s Legacy

Despite his injury, Mertz has left an indelible mark on the Florida program. In five games this season, he passed for six touchdowns with two interceptions and leads the country with a 76.6 completion percentage. He also threw a touchdown pass in 15 of his 16 career starts at Florida.

As Mertz begins his recovery, he has vowed to remain a part of the program and help his teammates win from the sideline. His dedication and perseverance will undoubtedly inspire his teammates as they navigate the challenges ahead.
