University of Georgia’s Head Coach Kirby Smart announced on Wednesday that wide receiver Colbie Young has been suspended indefinitely from the team due to his arrest on Tuesday morning. Young faces misdemeanor charges of battery and assault on an unborn child.
Coach Smart met with Young on Wednesday morning and stated, “He’s been suspended indefinitely until this legal matter is resolved. We’re committed to educating our players and ensuring they understand the gravity of these incidents.” Smart emphasized the importance of responsible decision-making both on and off the field, calling the situation “very unfortunate.”
Young, a transfer from Miami, was arrested at 4:18 a.m. ET and released on $3,800 bond. This marks the eighth Georgia football player arrest in 2024, although three of those players had their charges dismissed or pleaded down.
According to the police report, a 20-year-old woman, identified as Young’s ex-girlfriend, alleged that Young grabbed her arm and pulled her out of his room during a heated conversation. She also claimed that Young squeezed her torso and abdomen, causing visible injuries. Young denied any physical contact, and his attorney, Kim Stephens, stated that Young will be “fully exonerated” once the investigation is complete.
Young had 11 catches for 149 yards with two touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ first five games. Coach Smart expressed frustration with the string of arrests involving Georgia players, saying it has taken a toll on everyone associated with the program. He emphasized the importance of his players making better decisions off the field, taking responsibility as a leader, and striving to make a positive impact.
