New Orleans Saints Quarterback Derek Carr Sidelined with Oblique Injury
In a disappointing turn of events, Saints quarterback Derek Carr has been diagnosed with an oblique injury, sources close to the team confirmed. The injury occurred during Monday night’s 26-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, with Carr sustaining the injury while throwing an incomplete pass towards the end of the game.
An MRI conducted on Tuesday revealed the extent of the injury, which is expected to keep Carr out of commission for an undetermined amount of time. The Saints have a packed schedule ahead, with two games in the next 10 days, including a matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday and a Thursday Night Football game against the Denver Broncos on October 17.
In Carr’s absence, either rookie Spencer Rattler or Jake Haener will take the reins. Haener replaced Carr during the Chiefs game and is a strong contender to start in his place. The oblique muscles play a crucial role in a quarterback’s throwing power, making it difficult for Carr to continue playing without risking further injury.
Carr has a history of injuries, having suffered four significant setbacks since joining the Saints. Last season, he sprained his AC joint in his shoulder and was placed in concussion protocol twice. This season, he was listed as having a left groin injury in Week 4.
While the exact timeline for Carr’s return is unknown, oblique injuries often require multiweek recoveries. The Saints will be hoping for a speedy recovery, but in the meantime, they’ll have to rely on their backup quarterbacks to lead the team.
