Rising Star Returns to Formidable Backcourt Duo After Year-Long Recovery
After a grueling 18-month rehabilitation process, Notre Dame’s star point guard Olivia Miles is finally set to make her highly anticipated return to the court. Miles, who suffered a devastating knee injury in February 2023, has been working tirelessly to regain her strength and confidence. The 5-foot-10 floor leader, known for her exceptional passing vision, is eager to form a dynamic backcourt duo with Hannah Hidalgo, who rose to stardom in Miles’ absence.
Miles reflected on her arduous journey, saying, “I had to constantly remind myself that this setback was an opportunity for growth, not a hindrance. I’ve come out stronger, both physically and mentally, and I’m more confident than ever.” The rehab process was far from easy, with Miles often feeling frustrated and sore. She recalled the discomfort of exercises like bending her surgically repaired knee, saying, “It’s tough because you know you’re not playing.”
Coach Niele Ivey, who has personal experience with ACL injuries, understands the challenges Miles faced. Ivey noted that there’s a period of time where progress feels stagnant, but Miles is now on the upward trajectory. With Miles’ return, the Irish will boast a formidable backcourt duo, with Hidalgo, who averaged 22.6 points as a freshman, providing a scoring punch.
Hidalgo is excited to finally share the court with Miles, saying, “I think we complement each other perfectly. Coach Ivey recruits players who fit together seamlessly, and I know we’ll work well together.” Coach Ivey views Miles and Hidalgo as interchangeable guards who can help each other thrive. Miles will take some scoring pressure off Hidalgo, while Hidalgo will help Miles regain her elite form.
The road ahead won’t be easy, with a demanding ACC schedule featuring powerhouses like NC State, Stanford, and Louisville. However, with Miles and Hidalgo leading the charge, the Irish are poised to make a strong push in the conference.
