New York Rangers’ Star Goalie Plays Hard to Get, Rejects Record-Breaking Contract Offer
As the 2024-2025 NHL season gets underway, New York Rangers’ goaltender Igor Shesterkin has sent shockwaves through the hockey world by turning down a historic contract extension. The 28-year-old Russian native, entering the final year of his four-year deal, was offered an unprecedented eight-year, $88 million deal that would have made him the highest-paid goalie in NHL history.
Shesterkin, who has been a stalwart in net for the Rangers since being drafted in 2014, has been instrumental in the team’s success, earning Vezina Trophy honors in 2021-22 and helping the team win the Presidents’ Trophy last season. Despite his impressive résumé, Shesterkin has opted to test the free agent waters, leaving the Rangers scrambling to secure his services beyond this season.
The rejected offer would have surpassed the eight-year, $84 million deal signed by former Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price in 2017. Shesterkin’s decision has sparked speculation about his future with the Rangers, with some wondering if he’ll remain with the team that has become his home.
In a recent interview, Shesterkin expressed his affection for the Rangers and their fans, but remained noncommittal about his long-term plans. “I love this team, I love the fans, so of course, it would be great to stay here,” he said. “But you never know what’s going to happen.”
As the Rangers prepare to face off against the Pittsburgh Penguins in their season opener, Shesterkin is expected to start in net, with veteran Jonathan Quick serving as his backup. With the Rangers looking to build on last season’s success, Shesterkin’s contract situation will undoubtedly be a major storyline to follow throughout the year.
