In the midst of their bye week, the Minnesota Vikings are dealing with a significant setback as star running back Aaron Jones is nursing a right hip injury. Coach Kevin O’Connell revealed on Tuesday that Jones’ status is uncertain, pending further evaluation. Although the initial prognosis suggests that the injury may not be long-term, it’s unclear whether Jones will be fit to take the field when the Vikings face off against the Detroit Lions in Week 7.
Jones exited Sunday’s 23-17 win over the New York Jets in the first half and didn’t return. In his absence, backup Ty Chandler struggled to make an impact, managing just 30 yards on 14 carries. However, Chandler did showcase his potential with a 32-yard run, which was unfortunately nullified by an illegal shift penalty involving receiver Justin Jefferson. The young running back also had a costly fumble after dropping a pitch from quarterback Sam Darnold.
Despite Chandler’s shaky performance, O’Connell expressed confidence in his abilities. As a fifth-round pick in 2022, Chandler has already demonstrated his capabilities, having taken over the starting role for parts of the 2023 season and racking up 461 yards. The Vikings had brought in Jones on a one-year deal after his release from the Green Bay Packers, and he has since accumulated 517 scrimmage yards, good for seventh-best in the league.
