In anticipation of the highly charged National League Division Series matchup between the Padres and their arch-rivals, the Dodgers, the San Diego team has issued a stern reminder to fans about maintaining a respectful atmosphere at Petco Park. The warning comes on the heels of a contentious Game 2, which saw tempers fray on the field and in the stands at Dodger Stadium.
During Sunday’s game, a 12-minute delay ensued after enthusiastic fans hurled baseballs in the direction of Padres left fielder Jurickson Profar, followed by a shower of trash onto the outfield. The incident was sparked by Profar’s impressive catch, which robbed Mookie Betts of a home run. Profar’s subsequent taunting of the fans, complete with staring and celebratory hops, only added fuel to the fire.
Tensions continued to simmer as Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty and Padres third baseman Manny Machado exchanged heated words on multiple occasions, including after Flaherty hit Fernando Tatis Jr. with a pitch and struck out Machado.
As the series shifts to Petco Park for Games 3 and 4, Padres team president Erik Greupner has urged fans to maintain the team’s proud tradition of creating an electric home-field advantage while adhering to a code of respect and sportsmanship. In a statement, Greupner emphasized that any fan engaging in abusive behavior, including throwing objects onto the field or directing offensive comments towards players or opponents, will be promptly ejected.
“Our team thrives on the energy of our passionate fans, but we must do so while demonstrating respect and consideration for all involved,” Greupner wrote. “As we strive for a World Series Championship, we need your unwavering support, paired with a commitment to good sportsmanship and class.”
The Padres have enjoyed a remarkable season, drawing a club-record 3,314,593 fans to Petco Park, with 56 sellouts in 80 games. As the team looks to capitalize on its home-field advantage, fans are encouraged to cheer on their team with gusto, while maintaining a respectful and welcoming environment for all.
