In the midst of a whirlwind offseason, New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe has been busy refining his skills both on and off the ice. The 22-year-old phenom, known for his fearless attitude and ability to rile up opponents, has been working tirelessly to become a more well-rounded player.
Rempe’s dedication caught the attention of Georges Laraque, a veteran enforcer with over 150 NHL fights under his belt. Laraque, impressed by Rempe’s potential, reached out to offer guidance on how to minimize the impact of blows to the head. The two spent several days on the ice together, with Laraque sharing his expertise on the art of fighting.
But Rempe’s offseason education didn’t stop there. He also worked extensively on his power skating, honing his skills with daily sessions on the ice. Additionally, he spent time with Rangers veteran Chris Kreider, learning the intricacies of tipping pucks in front of the net.
As Rempe prepares for his first full season in the NHL, he’s focused on becoming a more complete player. “Fighting is just a small part of the game,” he said. “I need to work on my skills, my skating, and everything else. I’m committed to becoming a better player.”
Rempe’s charisma has already won over fans, who flocked to meet him at Fanatics Fest NYC in August. His autograph line was one of the longest of the entire event, a testament to his growing popularity.
With 28 games of regular-season and playoff experience under his belt, Rempe is determined to prove himself as an everyday player. Laraque believes he has the potential to develop into a quality third-liner, citing his youth, willingness to learn, and physical attributes.
Teammates are also expecting big things from Rempe, who added 15 pounds of muscle in the offseason. “He’s a force to be reckoned with,” said center Vincent Trocheck. “He’s fast, strong, and has good hands. With opportunity, I think he’ll continue to get better.”
As the Rangers prepare to face off against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday, Rempe is poised to take his game to the next level. With his fearless attitude, improved skills, and infectious personality, he’s already won over the hearts of Rangers fans.
