Uruguayan Footballers Unite Against Toxic Team Culture
Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde has publicly supported Luis Suárez’s claims about the challenging working conditions under Uruguay national team coach Marcelo Bielsa. However, Valverde believes that these issues should be addressed internally, rather than being aired in public.
“When it comes down to it, honesty is key,” Valverde stated. “But it’s equally important to keep certain discussions within the team. We need to focus on resolving our problems behind closed doors and moving forward together.”
Sergio Rochet, Uruguay’s goalkeeper, echoed Valverde’s sentiments, acknowledging that problems exist within the team but emphasizing the need for a harmonious environment.
“Let’s be real, there have been issues,” Rochet said. “But we need to tackle them privately and prioritize the well-being of the team. We can’t let internal conflicts affect our performance on the pitch.”
Suárez’s recent interview revealed the deep-seated divisions within the Uruguayan team, citing strict rules and a lack of communication between players and staff. He expressed his disappointment in the current state of the team, saying it “breaks his heart” to see the Celeste Complex in disarray.
Valverde urged the team to put their differences aside and focus on the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers. “We need to move forward and work towards a common goal,” he said. “We’re representing our country, and that’s what matters most.”
Uruguay currently sits in third place on the Conmebol rankings, with 15 points in eight games. They’ll face Peru on October 11 in their next World Cup qualifier.
