On December 14, the city of Houston will play host to a thrilling showdown in the world of professional boxing. Reigning WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis, hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, will put his title on the line against Lamont Roach, the current WBA champion at 130 pounds.
Davis, 29, boasts an impressive record of 30 wins and zero losses, with 28 of those victories coming by way of knockout. His last bout saw him deliver a stunning eighth-round knockout of Frank Martin in June, marking his first fight since serving a 44-day jail sentence for violating the terms of his house arrest.
The highly-ranked boxer, currently sitting at number eight on ESPN’s pound-for-pound list, was initially slated to face off against future Hall of Famer Vasiliy Lomachenko in a highly anticipated bout this fall. However, negotiations ultimately fell through, paving the way for Davis to take on Roach instead.
Roach, 25, from Washington, D.C., will be moving up a weight class to challenge Davis for the title. Despite being the underdog, Roach brings a strong resume to the table, having won the WBA title at 130 pounds with a split-decision victory over Hector Luis Garcia in November. He successfully defended his belt in June with an eighth-round technical knockout of Feargal McCrory.
