In a stunning turn of events, Los Angeles Dodgers’ star player Freddie Freeman was forced to exit Game 2 of the National League Division Series against the San Diego Padres after just five innings due to persistent discomfort in his sprained right ankle.
According to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, the decision to remove Freeman from the game was unavoidable. “We didn’t have any other choice,” Roberts explained. “Freddie’s doing everything in his power to get back on the field, but we just couldn’t risk further injury.”
Freeman initially suffered the ankle sprain on September 26 while attempting to dodge a tag. Despite spending eight days rehabbing the injury, he seemed optimistic about his chances of playing in the postseason when speaking to the media on Friday. However, he woke up on Saturday feeling unexpectedly sore, casting doubt over his availability for Game 1.
Despite these concerns, Freeman played in Game 1, delivering two hits and even stealing a base. He was again placed in the lineup for Game 2, but after two at-bats, he was replaced at first base by Max Muncy and in the lineup by Enrique Hernandez.
The Dodgers will continue to adapt their lineup if Freeman remains unavailable throughout the series. With an off-day scheduled for Monday, the team will reassess Freeman’s condition before Game 3 in San Diego on Tuesday.
“It’s not an ideal situation, and it’s certainly a concern,” Roberts acknowledged. “We’ll take it one day at a time and see how Freddie responds to treatment. We’ll reevaluate his status before Game 4 and make adjustments as needed.”
