Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson’s availability for Sunday’s matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars has taken a significant hit, with his status being downgraded to doubtful due to an oblique injury sustained in last week’s win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Richardson’s injury, characterized as a deep bruise, has hindered his practice participation throughout the week, limiting him to casual throws during individual drills.
Veteran backup Joe Flacco is poised to take the reins, marking his first start since his late-season stint with the Cleveland Browns last year. Flacco, who entered the game and secured the win over Pittsburgh, expressed confidence in his preparedness, citing the intensified practice sessions he’s had while Richardson was largely sidelined.
The Colts’ injury woes extend beyond Richardson, with center Ryan Kelly (neck) also listed as doubtful and star running back Jonathan Taylor already ruled out with an ankle sprain. Defensive end Tyquan Lewis was placed on injured reserve with an elbow injury, and cornerback Kenny Moore II will miss his second consecutive game due to a hip issue.
In contrast, the Jaguars received a boost with defensive end Josh Hines-Allen clearing the concussion protocol and expected to play on Sunday. Tight end Evan Engram, however, remains questionable with a hamstring injury that has kept him sidelined since Week 1.
Richardson’s latest setback has reignited concerns about his durability, which he addressed earlier this week. The second-year quarterback pushed back against criticism, emphasizing the physical demands of the sport and his focus on recovery. Despite missing 13 games since being drafted fourth overall in 2023, Richardson has shown promise, ranking third in the NFL in yards per attempt and first in air yards per attempt.
