Wrexham Midfielder Sidelined with Ankle Injury
Wrexham midfielder George Evans is expected to miss an extended period due to ligament damage in his ankle, sustained during Tuesday’s 1-0 loss to Stevenage. Evans left the pitch before halftime and did not return for the second half. According to Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson, Evans will likely be sidelined for several months.
Evans joined Wrexham from Millwall in September 2023 and has made six appearances this season, playing a total of 175 minutes. Wrexham is currently tied for second place in League One with a 5-2-2 record.
The news is better for centre-back Max Cleworth, who also suffered ankle ligament damage in last Saturday’s draw against Leyton Orient. Parkinson stated that Cleworth’s injury is less severe than Evans’.
“It’s devastating news for George. He’s got severe ankle ligament damage and will undergo surgery on Tuesday,” Parkinson said. “We won’t know the exact timeline for his recovery until after the operation. It’s a huge blow for George, who had just found his rhythm.”
Parkinson added that the team is waiting for the swelling to subside on Cleworth’s ankle before determining the extent of the damage. There is a possibility that midfielder Ollie Rathbone, who has been sidelined with a thigh issue, may return for Saturday’s home game against Northampton Town.
In other team news, wingback Jacob Mendy has been called up to Gambia’s national squad for their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations doubleheader against Madagascar in Morocco. Mendy has earned three international caps for Gambia, including at the last Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast.
