As the postseason gets underway, two powerhouses are emerging as top contenders for the championship title. The Los Angeles squad and their East Coast counterparts are currently favored to take home the coveted trophy, with some bookmakers listing them as co-favorites.
In their respective divisional round series, the Los Angeles team is a strong -135 favorite over their California rivals, while the East Coast squad boasts an impressive -210 advantage over their Midwestern opponents. However, it’s not these perennial contenders that are causing a stir among bookmakers – it’s the dark horse Detroit squad that’s turning heads.
In just a month, the Detroit team has transformed from a 500-1 long shot to a formidable 10-1 contender, attracting a significant surge in betting interest – particularly in their home state. Two prominent sportsbooks report that the Detroit team has garnered over 50% of all World Series bets placed in Michigan since September 1, a staggering 10-fold increase over any other remaining playoff team.
This phenomenon isn’t limited to Michigan, as the Detroit team is drawing substantial support nationwide. According to one sportsbook’s lead baseball trader, a customer from Michigan placed a $200 wager on the Detroit team to win the championship at 500-1 back in late August. Since then, the team has leapfrogged other contenders, becoming the worst result for the World Series and either pennant.
The postseason’s opening round saw three preseason favorites – the Atlanta squad, Houston team, and Baltimore club – eliminated in a stunning upset, paving the way for underdog teams like the Detroit squad, New York Mets, and Kansas City Royals to advance. As the playoffs unfold, one thing is certain – this season’s championship will be anything but predictable.
