Melbourne Midfielder to Stay Put Amid Trade Speculation
The uncertainty surrounding Clayton Oliver’s future with Melbourne has finally been put to rest. The club’s new president, Brad Green, confirmed that the talented midfielder will not be traded, ending weeks of speculation.
Green made the announcement during the club’s best-and-fairest function, where Oliver was in attendance. The news was met with applause from the crowd, and Green expressed his excitement for the upcoming season, highlighting the strength of the team’s midfield, which includes captain Max Gawn, Jack Viney, Christian Petracca, and Oliver.
The trade period officially kicked off on Friday, with several players already making moves to new teams. St Kilda defender Josh Battle joined Hawthorn via free agency, while Harry Perryman linked up with Collingwood from GWS, and Elliott Himmelberg joined Gold Coast from Adelaide.
Despite having six years left on his contract, Oliver had been considering his options, meeting with Geelong earlier in the week. However, it appears that he will remain with Melbourne, much to the relief of fans and teammates alike.
Captain Max Gawn had previously expressed his support for Oliver, stating that he would be there for him throughout the process, regardless of the outcome. Gawn praised Oliver’s character, saying that he loved him not only as a player but also as a person.
The drama surrounding Oliver’s future had been a major talking point in the lead-up to the trade period. Melbourne had reportedly attempted to shop him around, prompting Oliver to explore his options. However, it seems that the club has ultimately decided to hold onto its star midfielder.
