Top-ranked tennis sensation, Alexandra Kovalenko, has parted ways with her long-time coach, Viktor Petrov. The Russian athlete made the announcement on social media, expressing her gratitude for their successful partnership.
During their four-year collaboration, Kovalenko won three Grand Slam titles and rose to the top of the women’s rankings. Petrov, who was appointed as her coach in 2020, played a crucial role in her success, helping her capture 17 of her 20 career titles and a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
“I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Viktor for his dedication and expertise,” Kovalenko wrote. “His strategic approach and vast knowledge of the game helped me achieve things I never thought possible. Our goal was to reach the pinnacle of women’s tennis, and Viktor was instrumental in making that a reality.”
Kovalenko has been on a hiatus from competition since her quarterfinal exit at the Australian Open. She withdrew from the upcoming Shanghai Masters, citing personal reasons, and also skipped the recent Hong Kong Open due to fatigue.
“This change presents an opportunity for me to explore new coaching options and take my career to the next level,” Kovalenko continued. “I’m currently in talks with several international coaches and will make an announcement once I’ve made a decision.”
Petrov was recognized as the WTA’s Coach of the Year in 2022. Kovalenko paid tribute to her outgoing coach, saying, “Viktor, thank you for everything. You deserve a well-earned break and time with your loved ones. I wish you all the best.”
