Renowned Rugby Star Makes Surprise Move Across the Tasman
In a shocking turn of events, former rugby sensation James O’Connor has opted to extend his Super Rugby Pacific career by making the bold move to New Zealand, inking a one-year deal with the esteemed Crusaders. O’Connor had previously been considering a contract extension with his current team, but ultimately decided to take on a new challenge.
The skilled playmaker, who has been plagued by injuries in recent times, will now have the opportunity to thrive under the guidance of seasoned coach Rob Penney. O’Connor expressed his excitement about joining the Crusaders, citing the team’s rich culture and innovative approach to the game as major draws.
“I’m thrilled to be joining the Crusaders for the 2025 season and can’t wait to immerse myself in this new environment,” O’Connor stated. “Throughout my career, I’ve heard so much about the Crusaders’ winning mentality and commitment to excellence, and I’m eager to experience it firsthand.”
The Crusaders, 14-time champions of Super Rugby Pacific, have been struggling to fill the void left by the departure of star player Richie Mo’unga, who is currently playing in Japan. Coach Penney believes O’Connor’s wealth of experience will be invaluable in bolstering the team’s playmaking capabilities, particularly with young talents Taha Kemara and Rivez Reihana vying for the coveted No.10 jersey.
“We’re delighted to have James on board,” Penney said. “His maturity and competitive spirit will undoubtedly push our younger players to raise their game. We’re confident that his unique perspective, shaped by 17 seasons of professional rugby, will bring a fresh dynamic to our team.”
O’Connor, who has been enjoying a well-deserved break in New Zealand – the birthplace of his parents – had previously explored the possibility of joining the Chiefs, but was thwarted by Rugby Australia three years ago. With a storied career spanning 63 Tests and 127 Super Rugby games across three clubs, O’Connor is poised to make a significant impact in his new surroundings.
