In sunny California, the Los Angeles Lakers are gearing up for their first preseason games, and Coach JJ Redick has announced that he will be playing his star duo, LeBron James and Anthony Davis, at some point during the weekend matches. Although Redick didn’t provide specific details on their playing time, he assured that they will take to the court when the Lakers host the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday and the Phoenix Suns on Sunday.
Last preseason, James and Davis had limited playing time, with James sitting out the first game and Davis missing the third. However, this year, both players have expressed their excitement about their current form, attributing their fitness to their recent international stint with Team USA in the Olympics.
A potential historic moment could unfold if Redick decides to play the Lakers’ 19-year-old rookie, Bronny James, alongside his father, LeBron. Although Bronny is expected to spend time with the South Bay Lakers in the G League this season, Redick plans to experiment with various lineups during the six-game exhibition slate.
Friday’s game against Minnesota will mark Redick’s coaching debut, and he has already received high praise from his players for his preparation and efficient time management. Lakers forward Rui Hachimura described their recent practice as a “tornado,” with Redick pushing the team to work at high intensity during their one-hour session.
Point guard D’Angelo Russell, who had difficulties connecting with the previous coach, has been impressed by Redick’s basketball expertise. “I’ve never really had the opportunity to build a relationship with a coach over a long period of time,” Russell said. “For me to see how JJ is trying to bring the playcalls and just level of IQ into each practice and each film session… it’s something to look forward to.” Russell was so enthusiastic about one of Redick’s plays that he sent his coach a voice note while golfing, thanking him for sharing the strategy.
