A trio of gridiron greats, including a dynamic running back, a decorated quarterback, and a stalwart defender, have taken a significant step towards immortalization in the sport’s highest shrine. The esteemed list of 60 players, whittled down from an initial pool of 183 nominees, features several notable names vying for a coveted spot in the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame class.
Among the semifinalists are a pair of returnees from last year’s list, including a versatile running back who etched his name in the record books with a remarkable feat of 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving in a single season. This accomplished athlete was a key cog in a dynasty that dominated the 1980s, earning three championship rings and amassing an impressive 410 yards from scrimmage in those title-winning efforts.
Joining him is a four-time Pro Bowl quarterback who once reigned supreme as the league’s MVP. During his illustrious career, he orchestrated a franchise’s first Super Bowl appearance and retired with a plethora of accolades, including 32,838 yards passing and 197 touchdown passes.
Rounding out the trio is a defensive stalwart who was an integral part of a legendary unit that propelled his team to four championships in six seasons. A two-time All-Pro and six-time Pro Bowl selection, this dominant force on the defensive line amassed an impressive 78 sacks over his 13-year career, earning a spot on the all-decade team for the 1970s.
These gridiron legends will now be evaluated by a nine-person Senior Blue Ribbon Committee, which will narrow the list to three finalists to be considered by the full selection committee in early 2025. Ultimately, one coach and contributor will join the three seniors, with up to three of these finalists earning the highest honor in the sport.
