In Berea, Ohio, a promising development emerged for the Cleveland Browns as star running back Nick Chubb returned to practice after a lengthy absence. Chubb’s surgically repaired left knee appears to be on the mend, but he remains uncertain about his season debut.
The talented back underwent a series of procedures to address injuries to his medial capsule, meniscus, MCL, and ACL, which sidelined him for the entire 2023 season. After participating in his first practice in over a year, Chubb expressed optimism about his progress. “It felt good,” he said. “I’ve been doing things on my own for a while now, so I’ve been used to everything I’ve done out there. It feels good.”
While Chubb’s return is eagerly anticipated, neither he nor the team has committed to a specific date for his season debut. He will need to be activated to the 53-man roster within the next 21 days. When asked about his readiness, Chubb replied, “Whenever I feel good.”
Notably, Chubb has overcome significant knee injuries in the past, including a torn MCL, PCL, and LCL during his college days at the University of Georgia. Despite this, he insists that concerns about contact or re-injury are not weighing on his mind. “Once you get out there and you’re running around, it’s like you’re 8 years old again,” Chubb said. “It’s like riding a bike. That’s not something that’s in my head.”
The Browns’ offense, which has struggled to find its footing this season, ranking 26th in points per game and rushing yards per game, stands to benefit greatly from Chubb’s eventual return. Quarterback Deshaun Watson has also faced challenges, posting a league-worst 23.7 Total QBR among qualified passers. As Chubb works his way back to full strength, the Browns’ coaching staff will be closely monitoring his progress, eager to inject some much-needed spark into their stagnant offense.
