National Hockey Teams to Wear Special Decal in Memory of Tragic Loss
In a heartfelt tribute, national hockey teams across the country will don a unique helmet decal this season to honor the lives of two brothers, Johnny and Matthew, who tragically lost their lives in a senseless accident. The decal features a stunning design with stars “floating toward the heavens” and the brothers’ names, along with their jersey numbers, 13 and 21, prominently displayed.
The brothers, both from New Jersey, were taken from their loved ones far too soon when a suspected drunken driver struck them while they were riding bikes in their hometown. The incident occurred just one day before they were set to stand as groomsmen in their sister’s wedding.
The national hockey governing body made the announcement, releasing an image of the decal, which will be worn by teams at all levels, including those participating in the national team development program and the men’s and women’s sled teams.
“Johnny and Matthew will forever be remembered as part of our hockey family,” said Pat Kelleher, executive director of the governing body. “This decal is a small way for us to keep their memory alive and celebrate their passion for the game and life.”
Johnny, a gold medalist with the national team at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship, had a storied career, playing for the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets. Matthew, who played for the Omaha Lancers and Boston College, went on to have a successful five-year career in the American Hockey League and ECHL.
