In a thrilling matchup, the Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres clashed in Game 2 of their National League Wild Card Series on Wednesday night. However, the excitement was tempered by injuries to both teams’ starting pitchers.
Braves left-hander Max Fried was forced to exit the game after just two innings, having been struck on the left hip by a line drive from Fernando Tatis Jr. in the first inning. Despite initially staying in the game, Fried struggled to find his rhythm, giving up five runs on six consecutive hits in the second inning. Relief pitcher Dylan Lee took over in the third.
Meanwhile, Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove also had a short night, leaving the game in the fourth inning due to right elbow tightness. Musgrove, who has a history of elbow inflammation, had thrown two slow curveballs to fall behind Matt Olson 2-1 before being visited by his pitching coach and trainer.
The injuries cast a shadow over an otherwise intense contest, with both teams fighting for a crucial win in the series. Fried, a former Padres first-round draft pick, has had a storied career, including a World Series win in 2021. Musgrove, a hometown hero, made history with the Padres in 2021 by throwing the team’s first-ever no-hitter.
