The National Collegiate Athletic Association has announced that it will maintain its two-regional format for the women’s basketball championship through 2028. The cities of Las Vegas and Philadelphia have been selected to host the 2027 regionals, while Portland, Oregon, and Washington, D.C. will host the 2028 Sweet 16.
This decision marks a significant milestone in the growth of women’s college basketball, according to NCAA vice president of women’s basketball Lynn Holzman. “The selection of these four cities is a testament to their ability to host successful events and support the expanding championship,” Holzman said. “We appreciate the efforts of all bid cities and look forward to building on the momentum of women’s basketball.”
Las Vegas will host the women’s tournament for the first time in over three decades, while Washington, D.C. will host for the first time since 1997. Philadelphia will host its fifth regional overall, and Portland will build on its successful hosting of regional play last year.
In contrast, the men’s NCAA tournament will feature a more extensive geographic reach, with regionals hosted by Kansas City, New York, San Antonio, and Los Angeles in 2027, and Raleigh, North Carolina; Detroit; Dallas; and San Francisco in 2028. Dayton will continue to host the First Four through 2028, with the men’s tournament spanning 25 cities across 18 states over the next two years.
