The World’s Premier Chess Competition Returns

Get ready for the most anticipated chess event of the year! The second season of the prestigious Rapid Chess League is set to kick off on October 3, featuring the world’s top players in a unique team-based format.

Six teams will compete in this elite tournament, each comprising an icon player, two male superstars, two female superstars, and a prodigy born in 2003 or later. The teams are:

* Alpine SG Pipers
* Ganges Grandmasters
* Mumba Masters
* PBG Alaskan Knights
* Triveni Continental Kings
* American Gambits

The league stage will consist of a double round-robin format, with the top two teams advancing to the final. In a twist to traditional chess tournaments, wins with black pieces will earn four points, wins with white will earn three points, and draws will earn one point each. A team victory will be worth three points, and a tie will be worth one point.

This innovative format has generated immense excitement among chess enthusiasts and players alike. Dutch Grandmaster Anish Giri, who missed the first season due to a scheduling conflict, is eager to participate this time around. “I knew about the league before it was launched, and I’m impressed by its unique concept. It’s amazing to see teams come together and compete in a tournament-style format.”

Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi, who participated in the first season, agrees. “The format is exciting, and being part of a team with Magnus Carlsen was an incredible experience. I’m looking forward to continuing my momentum this season.”

What sets the Rapid Chess League apart is its ability to bring together elite players from different nationalities, creating a unique team dynamic. As Anish Giri puts it, “I’m excited to get to know the young players and learn from them. It’s a chance to reinvigorate my love for the game and discover new approaches and strategies.”

The stakes are high, with a total prize fund of $900,000. The winners will take home $500,000, with the runners-up receiving $250,000, and the third-place team earning $100,000.

Don’t miss the action! The tournament will be streamed live on JioCinema’s app and website, with daily reports and updates available on ESPN India. The first round starts on October 3 at 5:45 PM IST, with subsequent matches scheduled at 8:25 PM IST and 9:45 PM IST. The final will take place on October 12 at 5:45 PM IST.
