Washington Spirit’s Head Coach Prioritizes Player Health Ahead of Crucial Match
As the Washington Spirit prepares to face off against the unbeaten Orlando Pride, head coach Jonatan Giráldez has made it clear that he will not take any risks with his players’ health. Specifically, star player Trinity Rodman, who suffered a back injury last month, will not return to the field until she is “100% available.”
Giráldez emphasized the importance of having a fully fit squad, particularly with the playoffs on the horizon. “For me, the most important thing is to be available, but 100% available,” he stated. “Sixty percent is not enough; you have to report 100%. You help the team in the most important part of the season because playoffs are very important, so everyone must be ready and available as soon as possible.”
The coach refused to provide a timeline for Rodman’s return, but expressed confidence in his team’s depth, saying, “We have a good roster in terms of numbers, and we were giving opportunities to other players so they had the chance to play the last game.” He also acknowledged the importance of not rushing Rodman’s recovery, adding, “When you win, it’s an important push for us as a team, understanding that we need the whole team.”
Giráldez also declined to provide an update on the availability of his squad ahead of the upcoming match, citing a desire to avoid adding pressure on the players. The Spirit will travel to face the Pride on October 6, looking to dethrone the league leaders.
Despite the challenges ahead, Giráldez remains optimistic about his team’s chances, saying, “They [Orlando] are doing a huge job, and we have a good opportunity to beat them. Why not? We are competing well, and we have chances to win.” He also praised Rodman’s potential, comparing her to one of the world’s top players, Aitana Bonmatí. “She’s there,” he said. “She has the potential to be one of the best players in the world. She has the potential because [of her] characteristics.”
