In a thrilling matchup, the New York Mets continued their remarkable streak by defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 8-4 in the opening game of the National League Wild Card Series. This victory comes on the heels of their dramatic comeback on Monday, where they secured a playoff spot by overcoming a three-run deficit in the final innings.
The Mets’ resilience was on full display as they responded to the Brewers’ early lead with a three-run second inning. When the Brewers reclaimed the lead in the fourth, the Mets countered with a five-run outburst in the fifth, led by Mark Vientos’ tiebreaking two-run single.
Jesse Winker and pinch hitter J.D. Martinez each drove in two runs for the Mets, with Winker’s two-run triple in the second earning him a chorus of boos from the Milwaukee crowd. The Brewers’ Brice Turang went 3-for-4, while Jackson Chourio, at just 20 years old, became the youngest player with multiple hits in his postseason debut.
The Mets’ starter, Luis Severino, recovered from a shaky start to allow eight hits and four runs over six innings. The bullpen, led by José Buttó’s two perfect innings and Ryne Stanek’s flawless ninth, shut down the Brewers’ offense to secure the win.
With this victory, the Mets are now one step away from advancing to the National League Division Series against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Brewers, on the other hand, have lost 10 of their last 11 playoff games, dating back to their 2018 NL Championship Series defeat.
