In a luxurious Beverly Hills setting, the newly appointed coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, JJ Redick, gathered his team for a dinner meeting to discuss the team’s identity and values. This marked the first time the entire team had come together in one setting.
Lakers guard Max Christie described the meeting as a crucial step in building a cohesive unit. “JJ and the staff had a big presentation for us about team values, ground rules… so we can kind of wrap everybody around an identity that we want to have as a team.”
As the team prepares for the new season, superstar LeBron James is cautious about setting expectations. “I don’t have any expectations… The only thing that we can count on each other is how we come to practice and come to work every day.”
Coach Redick’s focus is on efficiency, both on and off the court. He aims to create a team that excels in offensive and defensive efficiency, as well as making the most of their preparation time. James endorsed Redick’s approach, saying, “Great first day… It was very detail-oriented.”
As the team navigates the new system, James admits that he didn’t spend much time with Redick during the summer, instead relying on texts and learning as they go. “It’s a collision course for all of us… We’re all learning on the fly.”
Redick has announced his starting lineup, but the backend of the rotation is still up for grabs. He plans to use a nine-man rotation, leaving four spots open for competition. Players like Gabe Vincent, Jarred Vanderbilt, Jaxson Hayes, Max Christie, Cam Reddish, and Jalen Hood-Schifino will be vying for those spots.
Christie, in particular, impressed Redick during Tuesday’s scrimmage, playing alongside members of the starting group. James also praised the Lakers organization for re-signing Christie to a four-year contract, saying, “I think Max will be a big part of our rotation… I’m happy we were able to bring him back in the summertime.”
