In a move to prioritize player safety, a prominent MLB stadium has taken swift action to add protective padding to a previously uncovered area of its outfield wall. The decision comes on the heels of a recent incident in which a star player suffered a bruised hip after colliding with a metal chain link window during a game.
The player, who made a remarkable recovery, was back in the lineup for the start of the playoffs, much to the surprise of his manager. “I was shocked at how good he was moving,” the manager said. “If we see that he isn’t [100%], then we’ll pull him out of there.”
The incident occurred when the player attempted to catch a foul ball and crashed into the sidewall, making contact with the metal chain link inside the window. Fortunately, the injury was not structural, and the player was able to play through the pain.
This is not the first time a stadium has made alterations to its walls or fences after a player was injured. In a similar incident several years ago, a player requested additional padding be added to a fence after suffering an injury, and the stadium complied.
The added padding will provide an extra layer of protection for players, giving them peace of mind as they take the field. As one player noted, “I’ve seen that window before, but I never thought twice about it.” Now, thanks to the stadium’s proactive measures, players can focus on the game without worrying about potential hazards.
