INGLEWOOD, Calif. – After a year-long absence from the league, professional basketball player Kevin Porter Jr. has found a new home with the LA Clippers. Porter, who inked a two-year deal with the team, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to revive his NBA career.
Speaking to reporters for the first time this year, Porter acknowledged his past mistakes and took responsibility for his actions. “I’m accountable for whatever comes next,” he said, referencing a potential suspension from the league. Last year, Porter pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault and harassment charges stemming from a domestic incident involving his girlfriend.
As part of his plea agreement, Porter must complete a 26-week abusive partner intervention program or work with a private counselor. However, he revealed that he had been undergoing counseling and therapy even before his arrest. “I’ve had to learn about myself, experience some things,” Porter reflected. “And I feel like this is the best version of myself, so it’s been good.”
When asked about the lessons he’s learned, Porter remained tight-lipped, saying only, “I can’t say everything… But just my upbringing, the triggers, and things… The meaning of the experience and learning from it.”
Porter, who played overseas in Greece last season, averaged 19.2 points, 5.7 assists, and 5.3 rebounds during the 2022-23 season. He’s poised to make a significant impact on the Clippers’ rotation this season. “I always believed in myself,” Porter said confidently. “I know my truth, and I felt like it was good, so definitely didn’t count myself out.”
Porter expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to restart his NBA career, calling it “one of the top two best jobs you can ask for as an athlete, as a person.” Having experienced the loss of his NBA status, Porter is determined to make the most of his second chance. “I’m very grateful to be back, and I’m going to do everything I can to stay as long as I want.”
