Top-Seeded Tennis Star Powers Through to Semifinals in China
In a thrilling match on Monday, 21-year-old tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz secured a spot in the China Open semifinals for the second consecutive year. The Spanish athlete dominated the court, defeating 27th-ranked Karen Khachanov 7-5, 6-2 in a grueling 96-minute battle.
Alcaraz’s relentless baseline play and strategic service returns wore down Khachanov’s serves, allowing him to capitalize on four of 12 break opportunities. When asked about his approach, Alcaraz explained, “I always try to apply pressure when my opponents serve, making them understand that they need to bring their A-game to win. It’s a mental challenge, and I’m always looking to push them to their limits.”
This victory marks Alcaraz’s 46th win of the season, propelling him back into second place in the live rankings. He will face off against Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals, who secured his spot with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Italy’s Flavio Cobolli.
Medvedev, still seeking his first title of the year, showcased his skill with 16 fewer unforced errors than his opponent and converted four of eight breakpoint opportunities. Meanwhile, Andrey Rublev advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, extending his unbeaten record against the Spanish player to 5-0.
