In a stunning upset, the Irish women’s rugby team defeated reigning World Cup champions, New Zealand, 29-27 in their inaugural WXV1 match in Vancouver. This monumental victory marks one of the greatest in Irish rugby history, with Erin King’s late try and Dannah O’Brien’s conversion securing the win.
The Kiwis started strong, with Atlanta Lolohea scoring off a driving lineout in the ninth minute. However, Ireland’s Aoife Wafer responded with a close-range finish in the 14th minute, followed by a second score 18 minutes later. Neve Jones added to Ireland’s tally with a pick and go try in the 38th minute, but Katelyn Vahaakolo’s stunning try on the stroke of halftime leveled the score at 17-17.
The second half saw both teams exchange scores, with Holmes keeping New Zealand in contention. Erin King’s try in the 67th minute gave Ireland a 22-20 lead, only for Mererangi Paul to crash over for the Black Ferns in the 73rd minute. In a thrilling finale, King scored again in the 78th minute, and O’Brien’s last-gasp conversion sealed Ireland’s historic win.
Captain Edel McMahon was left speechless, praising her team’s unwavering belief and determination. “The girls got stuck in right from the get-go and it went to the wire. We had belief in each other and ourselves, it was absolutely amazing… it was unreal.” This victory marks a significant milestone for Irish women’s rugby, as they continue their impressive form under coach Scott Bemand.
