Manchester United’s Captain Speaks Out After Controversial Red Card
In the aftermath of Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday, team captain Bruno Fernandes expressed his discontent with the straight red card he received in the 42nd minute. Fernandes was dismissed from the game after a tackle on James Maddison, which referee Christopher Kavanagh deemed worthy of a sending-off.
Fernandes vehemently disagreed with the decision, stating, “I didn’t go with the studs. It’s never a red card.” He also claimed that Maddison himself didn’t think it was a red card-worthy offense. The Portuguese midfielder argued that the contact was minimal and that a yellow card would have been a more suitable punishment.
This incident marks the fourth time a Manchester United captain has been sent off in a Premier League game at Old Trafford, with Fernandes joining an illustrious list that includes Roy Keane, Nemanja Vidic, and Wayne Rooney.
Despite his disappointment, Fernandes took responsibility for leaving his teammates a man down, acknowledging that it made the game even more challenging for them. However, he praised their resilience and effort, saying, “I think there are many good things that we can take away from this… the resilience of the team was always there, and I’m really proud of the team.”
Manchester United struggled throughout the game, conceding three goals to Tottenham’s Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski, and Dominic Solanke. The loss leaves United searching for answers as they look to bounce back from this setback.
