Manchester United’s embattled manager has brushed off concerns about his job security, despite a dismal 3-0 loss to Tottenham at Old Trafford. The defeat, which saw Bruno Fernandes receive a red card in the first half, has piled pressure on the manager, who has overseen a mediocre start to the season with just three wins from eight games.
When quizzed about his future, the manager remained defiant, stating, “I’m not worried about that.” He emphasized that the team’s summer review had outlined a clear plan for improvement, which would take time to bear fruit. “We’re all on the same page, from the ownership to the players. I don’t have that concern.”
The manager was scathing in his criticism of the team’s defending, particularly in the wake of a similar goal conceded to FC Twente in the Europa League. Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven replicated the feat, surging from center-back to set up the opening goal. The manager lamented the repeated mistake, saying, “It’s clear and obvious that it shouldn’t happen, especially when we address it so loudly and clearly.”
With tough fixtures against FC Porto and Aston Villa looming, the manager faces an uphill battle to turn the season around. However, he remains convinced that his players are still receptive to his message. “Yes, I am,” he said, when asked if he believed his players were still listening.
The manager acknowledged that the team needs to learn from its mistakes, particularly in defense. “It can’t happen twice in four days that a defender can dribble through the whole team. You can’t make such mistakes in football.” With the international break approaching, the manager will be desperate to secure a positive result at Villa Park to quell the growing discontent among fans and pundits alike.
