**F**king Olympics Aren’t Going Anywhere: SLC Got This

In a recent visit to Utah, the head of the International Olympic Committee sought to alleviate concerns that Salt Lake City’s bid to host the 2034 Winter Games could be jeopardized by a dispute between anti-doping authorities. The IOC president downplayed the significance of a clause in the host contract that threatens to revoke the city’s hosting rights if the US government fails to recognize the authority of the World Anti-Doping Agency.

The clause was inserted into the contract in July, sparking tensions between the IOC and US officials. However, the IOC president characterized the move as a demonstration of confidence in the US Anti-Doping Agency’s ability to comply with WADA’s regulations. He emphasized that WADA, not the IOC, would be responsible if Salt Lake City were to lose the Games.

The dispute stems from a US government investigation into a suspected doping cover-up, which has led to friction between WADA and its American counterpart. The US has taken a more aggressive stance on doping, using its authority to crack down on schemes involving American athletes.

Despite the tensions, Utah bid leaders are confident that the issue will be resolved, and the city will host the Games as planned. The IOC’s move is seen as a way to ensure that WADA remains the lead authority on doping cases in Olympic sports when the US hosts the Games in 2028 and 2034.

Salt Lake City’s bid is crucial for the IOC, as climate change and high operational costs have reduced the number of cities willing and able to host the Winter Games. The city’s enthusiasm for hosting the Games again has provided a lifeline for the IOC, and officials are working to resolve the dispute and ensure a successful event.

US Olympic officials have pledged to mediate between the agencies, and Gene Sykes, chairman of the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee, believes that the end result will be a stronger anti-doping system for all. Meanwhile, Salt Lake City bid committee president Fraser Bullock remains optimistic, saying that there is no tension and only excitement about the future of the Games.
